Yes, bomb-sniffing mice could well be the best way of tackling would-be plane bombers, according to security experts.

Forget sniffer dogs, pat-downs and X-Ray machines, these miniature creatures are said to be cheaper and much more accurate, according to New Scientist magazine.

Israeli researchers have designed a body-scanner style machine, but instead of taking an image of passengers, it conceals three teams of eight mice behind secret panels.

Air is passed over the passengers then pumped into the panels and if explosives are detected the mice run into another chamber, raising the alarm.

Rodents have a more acute sense of smell than dogs and don't rely on the same amount of treats and encouragement needed by their canine colleagues, making them less work for trainers.

In return for working two four-hour shifts a day, the rodents have comfortable cages and access to as much food and water as they want. And they can retire after 18 months.

Gühweintrinker sollten womöglich lieber nicht diesen Scanner benutzen?

Glühwein in der Mikrowelle "explodiert"

Hallo, wolltte mir gerade ein Glas Glühwein in der Mikrowelle heiß machen. Ich war die ganze Zeit davor gestanden und habe den Glühwein genau beobachtet. Es ist die ganze Zeit lang absolut gar nix passiert - der Glühwein war wie tot in seinem Glas. Und dann nach so ca. 2 Min ist er explosionsartig übergekocht. Noch bevor ich reagieren konnte, war das Glas praktisch fast leer und der Glühwein in der kompletten Mikrowelle gleichmäßig verteilt.

Kann mir mal jemand erklären, woran das liegt? Ich hatte erwartet, dass sich der Glühwein ähnlich wie Wasser verhält und erst mal leicht zu köcheln beginnt und dann vielleicht irgendwann mal überkocht. Ich meine z.B. Milch kocht ja schon schnell über, aber im Vergleich dazu ist das ja echt langsam...

Israeli 'bomb detonation' airport scanner claim is a hoax

Summary: It's a farce email, but false information is never harmless.

There is a report floating around Facebook and emails claiming Israel has developed an airport security scanning system which will scan a person for explosives, detonating the explosives while the person is in a sealed, explosion-containing device. The report claims the potential bomber will be the only person to die in the booth, and on the ground at the security check-point. The story, however, is a hoax. The claim started with a joke email that has gone viral. The photo accompanying the story, shown here, clearly has a United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employee operating the scanner while in close proximity to the device. As you can see by the photo, the scanner operator is clearly wearing a TSA uniform, complete with shoulder patch, and is by far too close to the scanner for safety. Most importantly, if such a device were actually in operation, the operator would nee to be at least 500-1000 feet from the test in an outdoor location and in a bomb shelter for safety. No explosives blast cabinet would be used in a building or near people, especially the operators. While it is an entertaining story, many people are falling for the story, believing it is real and passing it along wondering why the US has not adopted such devices.
